#Gratitude #anti-bullying #GLSEN Tolerance and affirmation for minorities are improving

Going into the new year, I'm grateful for the upswing of tolerance and affirmation for minorities which includes sexual minorities, in other words LGBTQ kids. I'm a grandmother, former elementary education teacher, and I'm interested in this topic. There is less bullying in schools.  One reason is The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). What makes this unique is that straight students join sexual-minority students to end harassment.  Schools can make a difference in the experiences of LGBTQ youth.  At schools with gay-straight alliances, there are fewer homophobic remarks.  With less bullying and harassment, sexual-minority students have higher attendance rates and a more positive attachment to school.  Teachers use GLSEN’s resources, lesson plans, classroom materials, and attend professional development programs. Supporting LGBT students is the same as supporting any other multicultural group.  Every student needs to feel safe and valued.
People are people.  Sexuality and gender identity is complex, and no “conformity” is required.  It’s important for teachers to notice and react to homophobia which is good for everyone.  All diversity needs to be represented in a classroom.

The Disney Channel has a series, Andi Mack, which is a contemporary coming-of-age story about a girl who's trying to determine where she fits in and the many ways she can live her life. In another TV series, Good Luck, Charlie, two moms appeared in one episode.
